The BIM method will play a central role in the entire execution process throughout the life cycle. Current BIM training is still lagging a little behind this development; it often focuses mainly on the use of BIM-capable software. Functional BIM training is usually neglected. Especially in a BIM project, the responsibilities of the individual parties involved and the correct communication between these parties are extremely important. All those involved must be familiar with these roles and tasks.

As part of the BIM-Zert research project, researchers from four different leading universities (FH Salzburg-Kuchl, TU Wien, TU Graz, FH Kärnten Spittal/Drau), together with practitioners experienced in openBIM, the Überbau Academy and buildingSMART Austria, developed a standardized qualification and certification model for BIM in Austria. The recommendations from this research project are now being continued by buildingSMART Austria under the name BIMcert and correspond to the levels of the “Professional Certification” program of buildingSMART International.

The idea for this book came from discussions during the project and feedback from participants in the first run. This book is dedicated to the functional openBIM training and describes all topics for the certification levels of the BIMcert training. We would like to thank all colleagues involved in the project for their support during the project and the many ideas that were incorporated into this book. We would also like to thank Alexander Gerger for the careful design of the images used in the book. Special thanks go to buildingSMART Austria, in particular Alfred Waschl, for their support in creating this essential basis for future BIM training.

Christoph Carl Eichler, Christian Schranz, Tina Krischmann, Harald Urban, Markus Gratzl

 Vienna, January 2021

Foreword to the edition 2023

Two years have passed since the 2021 edition of the BIMcert Handbook was published. A lot has happened in that time. We received a lot of positive feedback on the first edition. For many, it has probably become an important textbook and reference work. The corrections and requests for additions were particularly helpful for us. There have also been some very interesting new and further developments from the international buildingSMART community during this time. We wanted to include these in our book in the usual high quality. We therefore decided to invite guest authors in addition to our own enhancements. We are delighted to have contributions from Léon van Berlo and Simon Fischer (on IDS), Jan Morten Loës and Frédéric Grand (on bSDD) and Thomas Glättli (on UCM). These contributions expand the book with expertise on new, important topics.

First of all, we would like to thank the guest authors for their valuable text contributions and all readers for their feedback and suggestions. We would also like to thank Alexander Gerger for the careful typesetting of the book and the excellent design of the (new) images. Special thanks again to buildingSMART Austria, especially Alfred Waschl, for their support in creating this essential basis for BIM training.

Christoph Carl Eichler, Christian Schranz, Tina Krischmann, Harald Urban

 Vienna, February 2023

Foreword to the 2024edition

Time never stands still – especially not in the further development of BIM. We focused on two topics for this edition: updating and internationalizing the content. We have therefore added two experts to our team of main authors: Markus Hopferwieser and Simon Fischer. The technical update concerns, for example, the complete revision of the sections on IFC4.3, the LOIN information requirement depth and the buildingSMART Data Dictionary bSDD. For the latter two, we were able to recruit international experts Paul Curschellas (LOIN) and Artur Tomczak (Product Manager of bSDD at buildingSMART International) as guest authors, who wrote the respective sections together with Tina Krischmann (LOIN) and Jan Morten Loës and Simon Fischer (bSDD). In addition, we expanded Chapter 2 (Basic knowledge) to include introductions to those topics that are covered in much greater detail in Chapter 3 (In-depth knowledge).

Further internationalization was a frequently expressed wish of our readers, especially from our neighboring countries. In both Chapter 2 (Basic knowledge) and in (BIM project implementation), we integrated the ISO 19650 series of standards to a greater extent, as well as some info boxes on national particularities in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. We were supported by 18 BIM experts from these three countries, who gave us feedback and comments after carefully reviewing the BIMcert Handbook. We would like to thank Kurt Battisti, Paul Curschellas, Thomas Glättli, Alexander Joslyn, Stefan Kraft, Timo Kretschmer, Anica Meins-Becker, Jörg Meyer, Peter Moser, Christina Ntavela, Ulrich Prestle, Karolina Sadomska, Roman Schneider, Birgitta Schock, René Sigg, Sebastian Toszeghi, Adrian Wildenauer and Thomas Wirth.

Finally, we would again like to thank the guest authors for their valuable contributions, the editors for their comments and all the readers for their positive feedback. Alexander Gerger is again responsible for the typesetting of the book and for the excellent design of all the images (many of which have been redesigned). It is also thanks to the internationalization mentioned above that buildingSMART Austria (many thanks to Alfred Waschl) is supporting the publication of the BIMcert Handbook this year in cooperation with buildingSMART Germany and Bauen digital Schweiz / buildingSMART Switzerland. We would also like to thank these chapters for their excellent cooperation.

Christoph Carl Eichler, Christian Schranz, Tina Krischmann, Harald Urban, Markus Hopferwieser, Simon Fischer

Vienna, February 2024

Publication from Eichler, C.C., Schranz, Ch., Krischmann, T., Urban, H., Hopferwieser, M., Fischer, S.: BIMcertHandbuch- Grundlagenwissen openBIM.
